Action Camera vs Smartphone: Do You Need Both?

Updated October 20262 min read

Smartphones now record excellent stabilised 4K video, which makes many people wonder whether a separate action camera is still worth buying. The answer depends less on image quality and more on where you film.

Durability and water

Action cameras are built to be dropped, splashed and submerged. Many are waterproof to around 10 metres without a case. Phones are water-resistant, but manufacturers rarely cover water damage under warranty, and a cracked phone costs far more to replace.

Mounting and perspective

The defining advantage of action cameras is mounting. Helmet, chest, handlebar and board mounts capture points of view a phone cannot safely reach. Mounting a phone on a bike or helmet is possible, but it is heavier, more fragile and vibration can damage some phone camera stabilisation systems.

Image quality

Phones usually win in low light thanks to larger sensors and powerful processing, and they produce better photos overall. In bright daylight, good action cameras produce footage that is very close, with a wider field of view that suits sports.

Stabilisation

Both offer strong electronic stabilisation. Action cameras add features like horizon levelling that keep footage straight even if the camera rotates, which is valuable on bikes and skis.

Battery and storage

Recording video drains a phone quickly, leaving you without navigation or communication on a hike. An action camera keeps your phone's battery free for maps and emergencies, and swappable batteries extend shooting time.

Convenience

Your phone is always with you and shares footage instantly. An action camera requires transferring files, although apps make this easier.

Which to choose

Use your phone for everyday moments, low-light scenes and quick sharing. Add an action camera if you cycle, ski, surf, dive or film anything where the camera might get wet, dropped or mounted.

Accessories cost

Mounts, batteries and memory cards add to an action camera's price. Phones need cases and mounts for similar uses, which can be expensive and less secure. Consider the total kit cost rather than the camera price alone.

Editing workflow

Phone footage is ready for quick edits in phone apps. Action camera apps offer automatic edits, but transferring large 4K files can take time.
