Best Laptop Under $500: Where the Compromises Are Worth Making

Updated October 20262 min read

Five hundred dollars still buys a capable everyday laptop, but this is the price band where manufacturers cut corners you cannot see on a spec sheet. The trick is knowing which cuts hurt and which ones you will never notice.

What $500 realistically buys

Expect a recent entry or mid-level processor, an SSD, a 14 to 15.6 inch screen and a plastic body. That combination handles documents, browsing, streaming and video calls without trouble. It will not handle serious gaming, 4K video editing or heavy multitasking with dozens of apps open.

Protect these three things

  1. At least 8 GB of RAM, ideally 16 GB. Some budget models ship with 4 GB, which makes even a browser feel sluggish. Check whether the memory is upgradable; a free slot lets you add more later cheaply.
  2. A real SSD of 256 GB or more. Avoid eMMC storage, which is much slower and often only 64 or 128 GB.
  3. An IPS screen at 1920x1080. Low-cost TN panels with 1366x768 resolution look washed out and fuzzy. A good screen makes a cheap laptop feel far more expensive.

Shortcuts that are fine to accept

  • A plastic chassis instead of aluminium, provided reviews do not mention serious keyboard flex.
  • An older generation processor, which is often faster than a new low-end chip at the same price.
  • Average speakers, since headphones fix that instantly.
  • Fewer ports, if you can live with one small USB-C hub.

Consider a Chromebook or a refurbished machine

If your work happens almost entirely in a browser, a Chromebook in this price range often feels faster and lasts longer on battery than a Windows laptop with the same budget. Manufacturer-refurbished business laptops are another strong option: they offer sturdier keyboards and better build quality than new consumer models at the same price, usually with a warranty.

Red flags in listings

Be wary of vague processor names without model numbers, screens listed only as "HD", and battery claims without independent tests. Those listings usually hide the exact compromises that make a budget laptop frustrating to use.
