Best Router Under $200: Wi-Fi 6E, Multi-Gig and Stronger Coverage
Under $200, routers add the features that help busy homes: newer Wi-Fi bands, faster wired ports and processors that handle dozens of devices without slowing down.
What $200 realistically buys
Expect a strong Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router, sometimes an entry Wi-Fi 7 model on sale, at least one 2.5 Gbps port, better antennas and processors, and mature apps with parental controls and quality-of-service settings.
Who this tier is for
Households with many devices, fast internet plans, gamers and remote workers in medium-size homes. Small apartments with basic plans rarely need this tier.
Pros: what this budget gets right
- 6 GHz band (6E): less interference for compatible phones and laptops.
- Multi-gig ports: use internet plans faster than 1 Gbps.
- Better range and capacity: stronger performance with many connected devices.
- Richer features: VPN support, QoS and advanced security options.
Cons: where routers at this price cut corners
- 6 GHz range: the new band covers shorter distances through walls.
- Single unit limits: large or multi-floor homes may still need mesh.
- Subscriptions: some security features cost extra.
How this tier differs from under $100
Our routers under $100 guide covers models that suit apartments and gigabit plans. This tier pays for newer bands, multi-gig wiring and capacity. If coverage is the main problem, compare with mesh Wi-Fi under $300. Starlink users should also read our router for Starlink guide.
Check your devices
6E and Wi-Fi 7 benefits only reach devices that support them. Check your main phones and laptops first. Older devices still connect on 2.4 and 5 GHz and benefit from the stronger processor and antennas.
Placement and setup
Even a capable router underperforms in a cupboard or behind a TV. Place it centrally and in the open, update the firmware on day one, enable WPA3 where supported and change the default admin password.
Gaming and video calls
Wire consoles and desktop PCs directly to the router's ports where possible, and use quality-of-service settings to prioritise game traffic and video calls over large downloads.
Verdict: when to stretch or save
Choose this tier for busy homes, fast plans and gaming. Save with an under-$100 Wi-Fi 6 router for apartments. Choose mesh instead if dead zones are the issue.
