Comparison
Tablet vs Laptop: Which Should Be Your Main Device?
Modern tablets with keyboards look like laptops, and laptops with touchscreens look like tablets. The real difference is the operating system and how comfortable each is for the work you do most.
Productivity
Laptops are better for long documents, multitasking with many windows, file management and specialised desktop software. Tablets have improved multitasking, but mobile apps can lack features found in desktop versions. If your job relies on specific software, check whether a tablet version exists and how complete it is.
Portability and battery
Tablets are lighter and thinner, with excellent battery life and instant wake. They are great for reading, note-taking and travel. Lightweight laptops are close behind and offer a built-in keyboard and trackpad without extra accessories.
Note-taking and creativity
Tablets with a stylus excel at handwritten notes, annotation and drawing. For students in maths-heavy subjects or artists, that alone can make a tablet the better primary device.
Accessories change the price
- A keyboard case and stylus can add a significant amount to a tablet's cost.
- A tablet with accessories may cost as much as a capable laptop.
Compare full setups rather than base prices.
Entertainment
Tablets are excellent for streaming and reading in bed. Laptops are better for PC gaming and connecting to external monitors.
Which to choose
Choose a laptop as your main device for work, coding, heavy multitasking or desktop software. Choose a tablet if you mainly read, watch, browse and take handwritten notes. Many students use a laptop for assignments and a tablet for lectures.
Ports and external displays
Laptops usually offer more ports for drives, monitors and wired networking. Tablets often have a single USB-C port and may mirror rather than extend the screen on an external display, depending on the model. If you work at a desk with a monitor, check this carefully.
Longevity
Laptops can often be repaired or upgraded with more storage, while tablets are sealed. Software support matters for both: premium tablets often receive updates for many years, as do mainstream laptops. A cheap device of either kind may lose support earlier, so look up update policies.
A hybrid option
Detachable 2-in-1 laptops combine a full desktop operating system with a tablet form factor, though they compromise on lap comfort and battery life.
